What Are Dental Implants, and How Do They Work?
Dental implants are small titanium (usually) threaded posts that look like screws. They are implanted into your jawbone (if you have enough bone density). The purpose of a dental implant is to hold a prosthetic tooth or an entire arch of artificial teeth in place. Dental implants restore your ability to speak and chew properly.
The Three Parts of a Dental Implant
There are three parts of a dental implant. Your dentist in Oklahoma City, OK, will go into more detail with you about the process.
1. The Titanium Implant
The titanium implant is the threaded post that is implanted into your jawbone to replace the tooth’s root.
2. The Abutment
The abutment is the piece that connects your implant to your new artificial tooth.
3. The Artificial Tooth (Crown)
The artificial tooth is what replaces your natural tooth.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Typically, dental implants will last a lifetime (if properly cared for). But that’s just the titanium post portion of your dental implant. The artificial tooth portion will generally have to be replaced every 15-20 years or so.
The Dental Implant Process
Your entire dental implant treatment will take three to six months or so. Some of the steps require a healing period before moving on to the next step.
Step One: Implant Placement
Your implants will be placed into your jawbone.
Step Two: Osseointegration
Osseointegration is when your jawbone and implant fuse together. New bone will form around your implants. This bone is what makes your new implants just as strong as your natural teeth.
Step Three: Abutment
After osseointegration, the abutment (connector piece) will be attached to your implant.
Step Four: Artificial Tooth Placement
After the abutment has been added, your dentist will attach your new artificial tooth, bridge, or denture to the implant.
That completes your dental implant procedure!
